Mitzi Humphrey, a founder of art6 Gallery and originator of the series
Pinkney Near Memorial Lectures in Art History, will present Belle Pendleton
as the the series' 8th lecturer on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 8:00 PM at the
gallery, 6 East Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia.
Dr. Belle Pendleton, the guest speaker, is Associate Professor of Art
History at Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA. Her lecture,
entitled "The Shipyard Paintings of Thomas C. Skinner: Promoting Prosperity
during the Great Depression," will focus on the murals produced by Skinner
in the 1920's and 1930's. Skinner served as Staff Artist to the Mariners'
Museum and the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company, a company that
continued to thrive throughout the Depression, despite the grim national
economy. Trained by New York "Ashcan School" artists, Robert Henri and
George "Lusty" Luks, Skinner produced gritty, action-oriented paintings
recording laborers engaged in the harsh realities of ship building.
Skinner's 6' x 10' paintings are currently on display at the Mariners'
Museum in Newport News.
